Boulogne sur Mer

For a brief guide, click here.

Boulogne is a sadly underrated town, though still accessible by fast ferry from Dover. It has a picturesque Old Town, good High Street shopping, excellent hypermarkets, magnificent beaches and at least two attractions worth the visit on their own – the aquarium Nausicaa and the leisure complex – swimming pools and ice rink – called Hélicéa. Close by, there are little seaside resorts like Wimereux and Wissant, and historical attractions like the Colonne de la Grande Armée, commemorating Napoleon's abortive plans to invade England. he was frustrated, of course, by continental enemies and above all by the British Navy. 'I do not say he cannot come', remarked William Pitt, 'I only say he cannot come by sea'.
