Bayeux | |
This was the first major town to be captured after D-day, and thus remains
remarkably undamaged. The Cathedral shows the transition between romanesuqe and gothic architecture. The most famous thing about Bayeux is the Bayeux tapestry, known to the French as Queen Matilda's tapestry. It wasn't made in Bayeux, it was not made by Queen Matilda, and it isn't a tapestry. It is an embroidery, 100 feet long, in the form or a strip cartoon, telling the story of the Norman Conquest of England and explaining how William the Conqueror had a perfect right to the throne. Norman propaganda, in fact. It was probably sewn in England soon after the conquest. I only have a couple of photographs here, because taking pictures of the tapestry is not encouraged. |
