| Caen is the capital of Calvados and of Lower Normandy. It was almost totally destroyed in the weeks after D-day, but retains several fine churches, including the Abbaye aux Hommes, which houses the tomb of William the Conqueror, and the Abbaye aux Dames, with the tomb of his Queen, Mathilde. | |
