Cerisy la Forêt

The abbey church at Cerisy marks the transition from Romanesque to Gothic. it was founded in the 9th century and rebuilt in 1032. It was Romanesque in style, but already approaching the engineering limits of the round arch. Later additions had to be made to reinforce the top-heavy structure, and these, including the buttresses and windows of the apse and the reinforcements to the arches which hold up the heavy central tower, are early gothic with pointy arches.
