Evreux
Cathedral city and capital of the Eure. In Gallo-Roman times it was called Mediolanum Aulercorum, after a Gaulish tribe named the Aulerci. Oddly, the modern name comes from a different tribe, the Eburovices. The similarity to Eboracum, the old name of York (UK) is explained that both names refer to the yew tree. It has been the seat of a Bishop since about 400. The vast Cathedral was built in the 10th century in Romanesque style, but the upper half of it was reconstructed in the 13th century in Flamboyant Gothic. It is especially noted for its stained glass (13th and 16th century) and the quality of its wood-carvings. The town is charming, sitting astride several branches of the river Iton.
