Les Tours de Merle
On a rocky spur enclosed by a narrow loop of the river Maronne, deep in the forests of Corrèze, stand the ruins of a fairytale castle. Or rather, of seven castles, since from the 12th to the 15th century each successive heir of the local Barons built himself a new keep alongside the old. Inaccessible on its high rock, the fortress defended the frontier between Limousin and Auvergne until the coming of artillery rendered it suddenly and totally useless.

Nothing, however, could make it less romantic.
