Ile de la Cité: Place du Parvis Notre-Dame
The vast square in front of Notre-Dame is a modern idea; You
can still see, on the pavement, the outline of the medieval houses
swept away in
the nineteenth century. In the square itself can be found the Crypte du Parvis,
a museum showing the artefacts found
when digging out the underground car park,
and the outlines of the Roman city discovered at the same time; the statue of
Charlemagne and his Leudes (sidekicks); and the brass plate marked 'Point zéro
des routes de la France' from which all road
distances in France are measured.
Opposite the river is the Hôtel-Dieu, the oldest hospital in Paris.
