There is some argument as to the location of the geographical
centre of France, Parisians will tell you that if you draw a line from the
northernmost point of the country to the Southernmost, and a similar line from
east to west, they cross in Paris, so there. The brass plate in the
Place du Parvis Notre-Dame
must be the centre as well as the place from which all road distances are
measured.
This is nonsense. Three villages, all in the Département du Cher, claim to be the actual Centre of France. Ainay-le-Vieil is the middle one of the three, but Saulzais-le-Potier, a little to the south, is generally considered to have the best claim. Saint-Amand-Montrond, to the north, is bigger than either (Saulzais is just a row of houses and a small monument), and the motorway service station nearby is able to make its claims widely known. |
